Life to the Full is a spiral curriculum that repeats the content taught: Nursery and Reception, Year 1 and 2, Year 3 and 4 and Year 5 and 6 are taught the same units. The repetition of the programme helps:
- Children change and grow; their level of engagement will increase as they develop their social, moral, cultural and spiritual awareness and understanding.
- The learning will be embedded as children build upon what they have previously learned – a truly spiral curriculum.
- Some sessions can be omitted one year if the school feel that children are not quite ready, or they have surpassed that stage of learning; similarly, particular focus can be given to certain topics if it is felt that is needed.
Although PSHE is a non-statutory subject we are mindful of the context of our school. Sacred Heart RC Nursery & Primary School is, according to English Indices of deprivation 2019, the most deprived school in Torbay and is within the top 10% of most deprived schools within the country. We recognise the need for PSHE to be a statutory requirement for our school and therefore consideration is given so that all PSHE objectives are taught from nursery through to year 6.
The objectives that are not taught via our Life to the Full programme are considered and these are taught either as a standalone session or as part of our curriculum offer within other subjects.
Picture News
Picture News is a timetabled taught session, weekly from nursery through to year 6. The scheme provides recent news stories and content allowing opportunities for children to learn about our world, develop independence, resilience, respect and unlock their own drive and passion for learning. We believe in giving children a voice and encouraging them to use it to impact things they are inspired by or feel passionately about. It is current, happening now and so their voice is given meaning and purpose. It is our world and we all matter.
